So let me be the first one to admit it…change is hard. It’s just easier to keep doing the same things, the same way. Why rock the boat. Things aren’t so bad after all, are they?
Let’s use the analogy of taking a Journey.
Maybe it’s on a cruise-ship. So what’s the first thing we do? We decide we are going somewhere. Next would be to decide where we are going. Then we would decide how we are going to get there. Maybe we would use a map to find the best routes. Or maybe we would consult friends or business associates. Maybe we would use the web or GPS. Once we have decided on a route, we would need to pick a date for when we are going to leave. We would also need to pick a date for when we would be returning home. And then…after all that was clarified and decided, we would need to be patient until that day came along.
Finally that day arrives and we board the ship. We are setting our sights on the adventure. We know where we are going, how long we will be gone, which route we are going to take and why we are going.
The captain says we are ready to go. What is the most important thing that comes next? We need to pick up our anchor and get detached from the sea floor.
How does this compare to setting and achieving permanent change in our personal and work lives?
Whether if it’s losing weight, getting more exercise, reaching out to a new client, or having shorter or longer business meetings…it’s all about change.
WHEN YOU CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK…YOU THINK THE WAY TO CHANGE.
Here’s your GPS SUCCESS STRATEGY.
The first thing we need to do is decide we are going to change.
So the next step for us is to decide what we want to change, (where we are going. It would be kind of hard to go on a journey if we weren’t very specific about our destination). The next step is to have a specific plan on how we will achieve that goal to change. (a map, or best route). We need to set a date for the beginning of this change action and also pick a date for its achievement. And of course a vital step is clarifying why we are taking this course of action…what is the reward for this change?
THE FEAR OF NOT CHANGING NEEDS TO BE GREATER THAN THE FEAR OF CHANGING.
And then the most important step of all. For that step seems to be the one that holds most of us back on a continual basis. That step is letting go.
It is releasing the anchor from our past. It is deciding to look at life with new eyes. It is willing to look at the unknown future with faith as well as hope.
SURENDER WHO YOU WERE FOR WHO YOU WILL BECOME.
There’s an old saying I heard many years ago that applies here…
“God can’t steer a parked car!” or a docked ship either.
